Osteoporosis is a disease in which the density and quality of bone are reduced, leading to weakness of the skeleton and increased risk of fracture. The disease and its associated fractures are an important cause of mortality and morbidity and, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), osteoporosis is second only to cardiovascular disease as a public health problem.
Axxam is addressing the discovery of new therapeutic targets for osteoporosis
by gene expression profiling in healthy and diseased human bone tissues and in relevant cellular systems.
Our current target discovery research activities are based on gene expression analysis of:
- Human non-pathological tissues
- Human pathological bone
- Human mesenchymal stem cells in vitro culture
- Human primary osteoblasts from patients
- Human osteoblast-like cell cultures
