Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic lung disease characterized by a progressive airflow limitation and a gradual loss of lung function associated with an abnormal inflammatory response of the lungs to noxious particles or gases. The term COPD includes chronic bronchitis, and emphysema.
COPD is a common disease causing a great deal of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The most important risk factor for COPD by far is cigarette smoking and smoking cessation remains the cornerstone of COPD treatment as there is currently no cure for COPD. Yet success rates in the best smoking cessation programs are very low demonstrating that better tailored treatments are needed.
Axxam is exploring the pathological mechanism of COPD by whole genome analysis and gene-by-gene evaluation of expression perturbation of immune cells in a cohort of COPD patients and control individuals.
