Alessandra Angeli

Grant Office
Alessandra Angeli is responsible for securing grants and awards from Italian, European and other international bodies to support the continuing investments by Axxam in new technologies and internal research and development activities. She has held this position since Axxam was operative in late 2001. Previously, she conducted business development activities for the Bayer Research Centre in Milan which she joined in 1989 as a researcher in the fields of lipid metabolism, cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis. Alessandra holds a degree in Biology from the University of Milan.
Daniele Carettoni
Head Biochemistry
Daniele Carettoni leads the Biochemistry group at Axxam. Prior to Axxam, he was a research scientist in the Biochemical Assay Development Unit in the Bayer Research Centre in Milan since 2000. Previously, he held positions as senior scientist in the Biotechnology Unit of Bracco R&D in Milan and as research scientist in the Research Centre of GlaxoSmithKline in Verona. Daniele was a post-doctoral fellow at the Italfarmaco Research Centre in Milan and he holds a degree in Biology from the University of Milan where he did his PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology.
Claudia Caserini
Head Technical Services
Claudia Caserini is responsible for Technical Services at Axxam. Claudia has been a researcher with Axxam since the 2001 inauguration and previously generated cell-based assays for
high-throughput screening for various pharmacological targets
in the cardiovascular area at the Bayer Research Centre in Milan. From 1998 to 1999, as a scientist in the Pharmacology Department
of BioScience Center, Pharmacia & Upjohn in Milan, she studied cell cycle
perturbations and apoptosis induced by novel drugs. Claudia graduated with a
degree in Biological Sciences specializing in Molecular and Cellular Biology
from the University of Milan and, from 1995 to 1998, she was a post-graduate
fellow studying mechanisms of drug resistance to conventional and new anticancer
drugs at the National Tumour Institute in Milan.
Chiara Cavalleri
Head Human Resources
Chiara
Cavalleri joined Axxam in 2007 to start up and lead the Human Resources
Department. Prior to Axxam, Chiara was HR Manager at Kone Industrial SpA,
the Italian subsidiary of the Finnish elevator and escalator company. From
2000 to 2005, she worked at Famar Italia SpA, a pharmaceutical contract
manufacturing and development company in Baranzate, Milan.
Chiara previously held different positions at the HR Department of SmithKline
Beecham SpA where she started as a Recruitment specialist in 1990 after receiving
her degree in Economics at the "Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi" in Milan.
Sabrina Corazza
Head
Enabling Technologies
Sabrina Corazza heads Enabling Technologies at Axxam. She assumed this role upon
the foundation of Axxam in 2001 and immediately prior to this she was responsible
for the generation of cell-based assays for high-throughput screening in the
CNS area at the Bayer Research Centre in Milan. Sabrina joined Bayer in 1988
while studying for her degree in Biology at the University of Milan and worked
in the QA and R&D Departments at Bayer Diagnostic Italia.
Paolo Guarnieri
Head Gene Expression
Paolo Guarnieri is responsible for the Gene Expression group at Axxam. Since joining Axxam in 2003 as computational biologist in the Target Biology group, he has conducted target sequence analysis, created and annotated biological databases, and developed custom software applications. Paolo graduated with a medical degree cum laude from the University of Milan in 2002 with clinical and laboratory experience gained at the Metabolic Diseases Unit, San Raffaele Hospital and Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan. He began his bioinformatics training at the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM, Milan) and at the Department of Biology and Genetics for Medical Sciences, University of Milan, where he identified genes responsible for complex phenotype pathogenesis. Paolo received his formal bioinformatics qualifications from the Centre for Molecular and Biomolecular Informatics (CMBI) at the Catholic University of Nijmegen - now the Radboud University in The Netherlands. There he was a member of the Molecular Class Specific Information System for the Nuclear Hormone Receptors team, focusing on protein sequences and structure analysis and databases.
Rose A. Lance
Business Development North America
Rose A. Lance represents Axxam in North America where she is responsible for marketing and business development in the American and Canadian markets. She is based in the Boston area. Rose has more than 20 years experience in the biopharmaceutical, life science and diagnostic markets ranging from market analysis, in-licensing, product management, strategic planning and forecasting. This background gives her an extensive knowledge base to promote biopharmaceutical discovery services. Most recently she conducted business development for 454 Life Sciences in Branford, CT, USA. During this time she was also the marketing liason for Roche for the transition of the 454 Genome Sequencer 20. Previously, she worked for companies such as Boehringer Mannheim (Roche)(Regional Account Manager), NovoNordisk (Life Science Business Unit Manager)and DAKO Corp (OEM Sales Manager). Rose received her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Southern Illinois University, USA.
Chiara Liberati
Head Discovery
Chiara Liberati heads the Discovery group at Axxam. Chiara has been a researcher at Axxam in the Enabling Technologies group since the 2001 inauguration, developing new reporter systems and performing target identification and cellular and biochemical assays for both internal research and Axxam collaborations. Previously she generated cell-based assays for high-throughput screening in the cardiovascular area at the Bayer Research Centre in Milan. Prior to this, she was senior scientist at Vicuron Pharmaceuticals in Gerenzano, Varese where she studied the genetics of
antibiotic-producing microorganisms. From 1994 to 2000, she was
at the Department of Genetics and Microbiology, University of Milan and then at the Department of Biotechnology and Bioscience at University of Milan-Bicocca where she gained experience in human molecular genetics as recipient of a Telethon fellowship, focusing on the regulation of globin genes expression and the molecular basis of thalassemia and other hereditary conditions. Chiara holds a degree in Biological Sciences specializing in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and a Master in Applied Genetics from the University of Milan.
Lia Scarabottolo

Cell Biology
Lia Scarabottolo oversees the four Axxam Discovery Services groups - Gene Expression, Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Screening Technologies. Lia heads the Cell Biology group responsible for the generation of cell-based assays for high-throughput screening and ultra high-throughput screening for various pharmacological targets including GPCRs, NHRs, Ion Channels, Electrogenic Transporters, TK receptors and Ion exchangers, spanning several therapeutic areas. Prior to the foundation of Axxam, she was leader of the Cardiovascular Group in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Department at the Bayer Research Centre in Milan, involved in the generation of cell-based and biochemical assays for targets relevant to cardiovascular diseases. She joined Bayer in 1987. Lia has a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology and a Master in Experimental Pharmacology from the University of Milan.
Gyorgy Simon

Bioinformatics
Gyorgy Simon focuses on the informatics and bioinformatics systems that support research activities at Axxam and the development of project-oriented software components. Gyorgy previously worked for FIMO, FIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology, as Head of Informatics Services based in Milan, Italy. There he was responsible for establishing and directing the general purpose and bioinformatics computer systems as well as for the development of application software for research assistance. Prior to that position, Gyorgy worked at other academic institutions with responsibilities for the application of bioinformatics to biotechnology and for information technology, as Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM, Milan) and International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Trieste). Gyorgy received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Systems Organization from the SZAMALK - Computer Application and Training Centre, Budapest, Hungary and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering with a specialization in Biological Engineering from the Technical University, Budapest, Hungary.
Michela Stucchi
Head Screening Technologies
Michela Stucchi is responsible for the Screening Technologies group at Axxam. She joined Axxam in 2001 and established the FLIPR platform for the development of cell-based assays for ion channels, electrogenic transporters and GPCRs. As a research scientist at the Bayer Research Centre in Milan prior to the foundation of Axxam, she generated cell-based high-throughput screening assays for receptors and ion channels involved in pain and neurological diseases. Michela received a degree in Biological Science specializing in pharmacology from the University of Milan where she also worked as a
pre-graduate student in the Laboratory of Applied Pharmacology.
Paola Tarroni
Research Portfolio Manager
Paola Tarroni performs technical and scientific appraisals of proposed internal
research activities for future business opportunity. She appraises and manages
extra-mural research collaborations and reviews technical and scientific components
of new contracts for industrial collaborations. She is responsible for public
and private financing for Discovery Research activities at Axxam. From 2001 to
2006, Paola led Target Biology activities at Axxam, a position she maintained
since joining the Bayer Research Centre in Milan following the Bayer-Lion alliance
in 1999. From 1996 to 1999, she served as senior research fellow first in the
Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory of BioScience Center, Pharmacia & Upjohn at
Nerviano, Italy before joing the CNS Laboratory of the Bayer Research Centre
in Milan in molecular biology and cell-based assay development. From 1988 to
1996, her professional experience was obtained in molecular biology in the field
of human receptor pharmacology while working in several academic research institutions
- CNR Centre of Cytopharmacology, Department of Medical Pharmacology, University
of Milan, Italy; ZMBH, Heidelberg, Germany; DIBIT, San Raffaele Research Institute,
Milan, Italy. Paola holds a degree in Biological Sciences and a Master in Biotechnology
from the University of Milan.
